University of Dayton?

Notable alumni of The University of Dayton includes: Super Bowl winning Head Coach Jon Gruden, Congressman Mike Turner, and Sportscaster Dan Patrick.

Will Sam Huist be the next to join this illustrious list of Alumni?

In one word…no!

In two words…absolutely not!

Tuition for UD is $27,330 a year, but that is not why I won’t attend UD.

Residence Halls cost between $4,780 and $7,100 a year, but that is not why I won’t attend UD.

Meal plans cost around $3,000 yearly, but that is not why I won’t attend UD.

I won’t attend UD because their website will not allow me to view information on transfer scholarships unless I fill out their online application first. That might not sound that bad until you realize that a $50 application fee is required just to submit the online application.

Are they joking?

They act like the information on transfer scholarships are some kind of top secret government project. I called the admissions office to try to get information on the scholarships and they were no help at all. I can’t even get information about the scholarships via Google.

This over pricing and concealing of information makes me feel like UD doesn’t even want me there at all and the feeling is rather mutual.

An explanation for these high costs can probably be attributed to UD being a private university. The differences between private and public universities are that public universities/colleges like Sinclair receive funding from the government and private universities like UD do not. Private universities/colleges get their money from tuition and donations. So costs of private universities have to be higher.

Here are some facts on UD:

· UD is a Catholic university.
· UD has 14 fraternities and 11 sororities.
· Student enrollment at UD is around 11,000.
· The average class size is 27 students.
· The student/faculty ratio is 16/1.
· Like Wright State, UD does not offer a journalism degree, but instead they offer a communications degree with an emphasis on journalism.

Next week I will be blogging on my visit to the University of Cincinnati.

  1. Holy cow! Are they kidding? I can't imagine a school not wanting to share information with prospective students. Even private schools should have *some* place where information is available. A pamphlet would even be slightly sufficient. What a crazy thing!

  2. FYI: It took me about 10 minutes to see that if you apply online its FREE. So much for your $50 application fee problem.

  3. I apologize to all my loyal fans out there for innacurately blogging that a UD application costs $50 to submit. Upon further inspection and closer reading I have found that the electronic application is free.

"The paper application has a $50 application fee. This $50 fee is waived when you submit the electronic version of the Common Application or our online Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarship. The fee is also waived for dependants of alumni."

Thanks to my fan Marisa for pointing out this diabolical mistake.

  4. I never wanted to go to UD. ALOT of my friends go there and I live near the campus. But the atmosphere just doesn't seem right to me. And, not to offend any UD students, but $50 fee or not, it seems pretty stuck-up.

  5. I went to UD for three years and plan to go back this summer to finish my degree in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism. I have to disagree with anyone who says that the University is stuck-up when that is about as far from my experience as you can get. UD is one of the most laid back and welcoming communitiesI have even been a part of. I will always be proud of my time there and have no regrets about the tuition and room and board rates. I find it money very well spent.

And although there is no major with a specific Journalism heading, the communications department is fantastic and the required coursework for a diploma in that area of communications does more than prepare any student for jobs in not only Journalism but in all other areas of communication as well including electronic media and public relations.

If the cost really isn't the reason you will not even look at UD, I highly reccommend reconsidering.
